Summer 2017

Findings

Message from the Dean

Susan Marquis

This summer, while anticipating the arrival of Cohort '17, we've been delighted to have new members of the graduate school's staff and Board join us as we move from "reimagining" to initial implementation of the redesigned Pardee RAND Graduate School.

First in the door, Chandra Luczak joined our development team to work with alumni and help you to stay connected to Pardee RAND. In an interview below, she introduces us to Michael Dardia (cohort '89), incoming member of the school's Board of Governors. Michael began his public service career as one of the earliest members of the Public Policy Institute of California—the brain child of several Pardee RAND alumni. He later served as deputy director of New York City's Office of Management and Budget and is currently vice president for finance at New York Public Library.

Most recently, Dan Grunfeld joined the school as Executive Vice Dean after many years of service on our Board. Like Michael, Dan has an extraordinary record of public service, including as CEO and President of Public Counsel. His belief in the importance of RAND's work, and in Pardee RAND's ability to educate our graduates to thrive in a rapidly changing world, are invaluable as we build the school our world needs.

I could go on... Instead, dive into this issue of Findings and discover more about Dan, Michael, Chandra, and the doings and accomplishments of our students and you, our alumni.

Pardee RAND Rolls Out Policy Design Studios

Professor Osonde Osoba leads a policy studio

A “studio” is normally thought of as a space where visual or performance artists work—a place for designing and making. But it's also a place for integrating knowledge, tools, and skills within an atmosphere of experimentation, speculation, and imagination. And, this fall, it will be part of the required Pardee RAND curriculum. More »
