Beth Asch, Ph.D.
Prof. Asch is a senior labor economist at RAND specializing in personnel economics and defense manpower. Her research has focused on analyzing incentive mechanisms in hierarchical organizations, with particular application to the U.S. military. This research examines the effects of alternative pay and retirement systems on incentives for recruiting, retention, ability sorting and productivity of personnel in the armed services. Her research has also focused on recruiting policies and their effects on personnel supply to the armed services, incentive mechanisms for military recruiters, and the incentive effects of the federal civil service retirement systems. She has also co-authored several papers on military conscription versus the all-volunteer force as well as on the immigration and emigration policy. From 1988 to 1992, Prof. Asch was a visiting associate professor of economics at UCLA. Prof. Asch received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago.
